Chillin with Jamie, Gizzi and the gang at The Big Feastival
Well perhaps not so much of the chillin, but we certainly had time for a little chat and a photo opp with some of the stars.
Along with three other Tante Marie students i was supporting home economist Kim Somaroo prepare for the live demonstrations in the Electrolux Big Kitchen feature at Jamie Oliver and Alex James’s Big Feastival in the Cotswolds this weekend.
Taking centre stage during the course of the weekend were a some big names including Rachel Khoo, Gizzi Erskine, Jaime and Gennaro (obvs), Valentine Warner and Tom Kitchen.
I was really impressed by Bruno Loubet of Grain Store, not just because he arrived early and insisted on doing all his own prep but also because i love the ethos of his food, where wholegrains and vegetables take centre stage with the meat as the support act.
Ashley Palmer-Watts, head chef at Dinner was also very impressive; his right-hand man Tom was a delight to work alongside, very professional but also so polite and friendly. I was lucky enough to assist Tom in making a delicious lovage mayonnaise to accompany an incredibly tender grilled octopus dish from their restaurant menu. Whilst on stage, i found myself distracted by keeping Ashley’s three-year old son Max entertained and out of trouble, but like a true professional Ashley and Tom had everything under control and so i wasn’t called upon for anything.
It was a great experience meeting such well-known chefs and having an insight into their recipes. The festival as a whole was great, with lots of artisan producers, and a musical line up including Basement Jaxx. As you can probably imagine camping at the festival definately wasn’t for me but overall it was great fun and something i’d definitely look to get involved with again.
